This place is a staple in Fairmount. The owner/place has been around for awhile. He definitely keeps an eye on his place (he is constantly there). I ordered a greek coffee which was pretty strong (it was basically just expresso which was quite disappointing for me because I thought it would be an americano type drink). The place has friendly staff. The place also has a small amount of space inside and a lot of outside space. The restaurant is full of Greek images which was pretty cool to see. I ordered from the lunch menu and ended up getting a charcoaled chicken platter. It had an amazingly charcoaled chicken taste. There was a side of rice and mixed veggies. My favorite part of that meal besides the charcoaled chicken was the amazing tzatziki sauce that had a bit of a mustard type kick to it. For dessert, the Galaktoboureko is to die for. It had this creamy inside with a sticky top.

In full disclosure I had read the reviews and had full faith that the food here would be great. Typically, I order some lamb dish at a Greek restaurant or Gyros. It's a good Greek staple to try. However, we were here in Philly for the Fourth of July celebration, and were on our way to the short fireworks display at the Philly Art Museum grounds, and with the evening being a hot one, and having to walk, we didn't want to eat anything heavy. Plus, we were at the disposal of footwork and Philly public transportation, so we didn't want to carry any doggy bag. This restaurant functions like a family owned restaurant and the staff was friendly and the service was spot on. The restaurant appears bigger than what it seems from the outside. For a hot day, it was well air conditioned and comfortable to eat inside. My husband and I both ordered seafood. I ordered the octopus and he ordered the shrimp. The way it was served was with the salad on the same plate as the seafood, so olive oil and red vinegar soaked some of the octopus and shrimp too. My husband isn't crazy about vinegar, so it was a tad bit of an issue. He liked still liked his shrimp, however, which was blackened and with lemon, and maybe garlic. I sampled his shrimp dish, and for me it tasted very basic. My squid came out a bit dry and rather tasteless. It was charred or blackened but I was truly disappointed. I really feel that I would give 3 stars for the seafood if anyone were to order this. I personally feel, or a gut instinct tells me that the lamb or gyros would be great here. I only believe so because we did order another Greek staple, which is the baklava for dessert, and it was delightful, the best I've had anywhere. The baklava deserved five stars.

I went to Zorba's with a group of 4, and we had an absolutely phenomenal meal of shared plates. The cold appetizer combo was truly phenomenal - each dip was more amazing than the next, particularly the garlic potato spread. The pita was fresh from the oven. We ordered the lamb meatballs and chicken souvlaki to share for mains. Both were phenomenal but I particularly enjoyed the meatballs for the wonderful sauce. For desert we enjoyed the baklava. I also loved that they have the classic ouzo candy to enjoy on the way home. The service was friendly and efficient. Will definitely be returning to this wonderful spot!

This a review of Zorba's Tavern on Fairmount Ave in Philadelphia. I was lucky enough to have enjoyed owner Nikos' Greek cuisine twice while in Philly for a week - once at my cousin Marina's and once outside the restaurant after visiting the Penn Museum. I always thought there wasn't anything that could equal my Greek mother's, aunt's or grandmother's Greek dishes, but they met their match with Zorba's and Nikos. If you go to Zorba's, you must experience a spin on a popular Greek lamb shank dish I have never had or heard of before: LAMB SHANK BRAISED WITH ARTICHOKES AND EGG-LEMON SAUCE (AVGOLEMONO) - Baby lamb shank, cooked in egg-lemon, artichokes sauce and served with rice and potatoes. One of the classics of the Sunday family table. I have had lamb shank many times, and I have had avgolemono many times as a sauce and as a soup, but I have never had it paired together for this mouth-watering delicacy that sends your taste buds to Greece itself. The other dish you must try is the SHRIMP TOURKOLIMANO - Shrimp sauteed in red wine and tomato sauce, with feta cheese. Dressed and surrounded by the red wine, tomato sauce and feta cheese, the jumbo shrimp melt in your mouth with a most captivating flavor combination. And, before you leave, you might want to try the best Baklava I have ever tasted. There isn't a restaurant here in South Florida that can equal the cuisine of Zorba's.
